Exploring the art of painting with light.

St. Thomas Episcopal Church

One of the oldest churches in North Carolina, St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Bath, North Carolina, is a beautiful place of worship, even today. The little church sits in a scenic area of the oldest incorporated village in the state. Dating back before the time of Blackbeard the Pirate, tiny Bath was founded in 1705, just 29 years before St. Thomas was built. An important harbor town for generations, Bath is still a popular destination for those who enjoy sailing.

Note: In yesterday’s post, I identified the location as Washington, North Carolina. It was actually shot in Bath, NC, as well.

Taken on the shore of the harbor in Washington, North Carolina Bath, North Carolina, this shot gives a feel for the atmosphere of this beautiful little town in the eastern part of the state. This little boy had a spectacular view of the harbor and a peaceful little area to dream his dreams.

3/21 – I’m not sure if I missed my medication yesterday, or what, but this shot was taken in Bath, NC, not Washington, NC, as I originally posted. My apologies to the oldest town in North Carolina.

Get Ready to Race

Get Ready to Race

Focal Length: 55mm; ISO 200; Exposure: 1/1600 sec @ f/4.0; Camera: Canon EOS 20D (Click to Enlarge)

My wife and I enjoy NASCAR racing and have been able to attend several races the past few years. In September 2009, we attended the race in Richmond, Virginia, and obtained pit passes to visit the garage area prior to the race. It was fascinating to watch the activity as the crews prepared for the race.

In this shot, the tire specialists for Brian Vickers‘ Red Bull team were preparing the tires to be used on his car. At a cost of a couple thousand dollars per set, just buying tires for a race would use up a good part of my annual income. When you begin to add up the costs to keep cars on the track for 36 races a year, it’s easy to see why the sport has suffered during the economic downturn.

Walking the Wire

In the fall, I accompanied a group of high school teens on a retreat in the mountains. One of the activities was a ropes course that required working in teams to move from tower to tower. I have to say that the teens were a lot braver than I would have been. Several of them overcame their fear of heights and successfully completed the course. I’m afraid I would have left permanent fingerprints in the large poles supporting the ropes.
