Digging through the archives, I ran across this shot that was taken several years ago. I was visiting a historical site not far from my home and this mare and her colt were grazing in the pasture next to it. I love the coloring of this pair and the way the color contrasts with the green of the clover they were feeding on. Normally, putting the subject in the center of the frame is not a good idea, but this is one case where it works well. I also like the sense of motion in the tail of the mare, which makes the scene more realistic. The two horses were walking as they grazed, so the image is not as sharp as I would have liked, but that’s one of the hazards of shooting photographs of animals…they don’t stand still for long.

Lee,
Awesome posts. I really enjoy seeing your pics. Thanks for this.
Thanks, Santosh, I’m glad you enjoyed your visit!
Beautiful shot of one beautiful animal.
They really are beautiful animals. I’m sure that’s what caught my attention when I took the picture. After I shot these the colt decided to get frisky and started galloping around the pasture. I almost wish I had taken a video camera with me. That was back before I got a cell phone with that capability.
It’s funny – I can’t go anywhere near horses because of allergies, but I absolutely love taking pictures of them. I think this shot is great because to me it conveys the closeness between mother and colt, not only physically but also emotionally.
Horses, like the moon, just seem to grab a lot of photographer’s attention. This was such a striking pair that I just had to get a good shot of them. This was the best of about five different pictures I shot because in the others the colt’s head was hidden or the mare was turned away.
Like you’ve said I’ve loved the color contrasts between the green and the brown. Great shot
