This photograph was taken at The Old Burying Ground in Beaufort, North Carolina, earlier this year. Originally shot in color, it just didn’t work for me because it was just too busy and there was nothing that I found interesting about the shot. I tried to manually convert this to black and white, but just couldn’t get it the way I wanted it.
I decided to play around with Nik Software’s Silver Efex Pro 2.0, and chose this image to work with. I am thoroughly pleased with the results. There isn’t any less going on in the shot, but it just works well in black and white. There were several “hot spots” because of the bright sunlight that day that are much less distracting in this version. Overall, I finally ended up with a product that I’m pretty proud of.

That is so cool… I took some shots of an old historic cemetary a few weeks ago…haven’t posted them yet because I’m not sure I like them. I even got a shot of the sign telling you all about the place….may get them up soon.
Very good…. dismal, but good.
Thanks, Rob, it is the kind of image that could be somewhat depressing. But I still love to photograph in historic cemeteries.
Nice picture, the lighting looks challenging. I aim to get Silver efex pro, I just have to slip it passed the wife’s gaze.
Mike.
Thanks, Mike, the lighting was challenging. The thing is, I didn’t fully appreciate that at the time. I did shoot some bracketed exposures for HDR and a couple of them turned out pretty well. I’ll share them at some point.
